Chicago - atmosphere was not collegial like NO - Louis with Glazer - Hot 5 and 7 weren't live. Glazer produced, "pulled strings" marketed LA as a commodity or Prize - different from NO primaryliy social performance of music.
In Chicago - LA gigged a lot - played with many different groups that he didn't play regularly or perform with. Didn't rehearse with them. Ray Charles - big but didn't carry prestige or impact as LA. o LA was poss. top music figure of the 20th cent. but before he was a big media star and with great personality - he was truly a great musican with great technical ability. Even Coltrane and Parker don't match his technical virtuosity.
Easy to sublimate with LA great personality. LA was great at putting on a show - evven not given his tremendous talent. Miles Davis - was arrogant as a star, for example. LA was much more low key and likeable even without talent. LA guaranteed a good time. Why important? B/c did the people in bars, speakeasies, etc. know what level of LA musical ability? Or was he a clown that could really play well ? (No).
In Chi, we have more work than we can handle - musicans don't have enough hours to perform the work that they could have. Made tremendous money - salary wasn't marker - tremendous tips given to them.
J world was self-perpetuating - LA would show other youngsters his techniques, etc. Later this wouldn't be the case. J at that time was much more down-to-earth, not the J "stars" that would come later.
Austin High Gang - Eddie Condon. A branch of J off the mainstream - besides dixieland, mainstream. high school kids who sat around at ice cream social after classes. Listen to phonograph - listen o J (NO Rhythm Kings) one day. Want to be J musicans - "garage band jazz". So listen and practice, and soon start plaaying.
Some white americans, listen and just decide "this is persona i want to be, pursue". If you could play 5-6 tunes, you could make money gigging as a j musicianas. Soloing wasn't necesasary as important. - Demand was huge.
NO Rhythm Kings never played in NO - played in Chi.
Recorded "sides" - one 3 minute song. Took whole band and just played together in a studio.
J performers could make MORE $ recording than performing. This started to take hold in 30's. Economic downturn in Depression meant those who didn't record didn't get work.
