Chi didn't have great deal of stucture - people didn't know where going, just enjoying the ride. Nothing to stop - open road with possibilities in 20's. Chi is notable because the opportunities abounded. Also - records were first starting stronghold from Chi.

Something american, new world about J. Active participation, its our identity as americans. Bix did jass b/c it was his music. Today there are gatekeepers that stop people from just doing a type of music.

For every Bix - 100 guys who did n't make it

Chi - sense of music that reenforced a certain lifestyle that no one would have imagined before - because 20's culture didn't exist before - prohibition brought 20's about.

20's changed into 30's and first j "stars" emerged.
