Satchmo paper notes

Louis Armstrong - Impact on Jazz in 1920's
Satchmo was influencial because he had a trmendous amount of the three things that we;ve heard about in class so far:

1) A virtuoso with a unique phrasing and sound - he rose to the top as the best - had immense respect among fellow musicians. He came out of the street tradition - at first a non-formal, self taught musician. As often happens with revolutionary artists, he had a background different from the mainstream - making him a unique artist.

2) Master of the Trumpet / Coronet that is the "master" jazz instrument - probably because of the many sounds and vocal qualities it can portay, Armstong "discovered" a lot of the range of the trumpet because he could. And he was able to portray these qualities in recordings - his recordings were the early "smooth" Jazz sound - as well as live.

3) A master performer who connected with audiences through Jazz, a music that came into its being in the 20's by its power to "entertain" an audience

4) Ability to connect to an audience - put polish on "hot" music and made it palatible to a larger (read, "white") audience. As Satchmo matured and grew in sophistication, he gained a wider and wider listening audience.

5) Armstrong brought joy and respectability to Jazz - making it accessible to whites.

6) satch was recorded - he was willing to record music in a "record" format.
